Essential Oils No Medicine Cabinet Should Be Without …

essential oils
PEPPERMINT has been used for thousands of years, probably because of its digestive health properties; making it a good oil for the treatment of indigestion, bad breath, and flatulence. Peppermint is also good for stimulating the mind and improving clarity and alertness. In the home, peppermint oil is used to get rid of mice, mosquitoes or ants.
FRANKINCENSE is a beautiful oil and one of my personal favorites! It helps to slow breathing down and has a calming effect on emotions. It is also one of the most useful oils for respiratory infections, especially when used in aromatherapy massage. Frankincense can also help with wrinkles in the skin when incorporated into skin formulations like lotion.
LEMON is a good, general purpose oil; with numerous health benefits. The scent of this oil imparts energy, confidence, and inner strength. It promotes clarity of mind, grants motivation, enhances energy levels, and aids in clear communication. The health benefits of lemon oil can be attributed to its stimulating, calming, carminative, anti-infection, astringent, detoxifying, antiseptic, disinfectant, and antifungal properties. The benefits of lemon oil include its ability to treat stress disorders, fever, infections, respiratory conditions, obesity, sleeplessness, skin and hair conditions, digestive problems and tiredness.
ROSEMARY is a stimulating and uplifting essential oil. It is a brilliant energizer, helps to boost brain function, and is recognized for instilling positive feelings. Rosemary oil is useful in terms of hair care, skin care, mouth care, anxiety, mental disorders, depression, pain, headache, rheumatism, respiratory problems, bronchial asthma, indigestion, and flatulence.
EUCALYPTUS is best know for its effectiveness against respiratory conditions. The health benefits eucalyptus are well-known and wide ranging, and its properties include anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, decongestant, deodorant, antiseptic, antibacterial, stimulating, and other medicinal qualities. It works to boost the immune system and when incorporated into massage oils or liniments, is a relief for aching muscles.
GERANIUM is an incredibly balancing essential oil, which seems to work wonders on the mind, body and spirit. It is frequently used as an anti-depressant; while its antiseptic and astringent properties make it an excellent oil for skincare products. Geranium has a light floral scent that is uplifting on its own … but when combined with oils like lavender or chamomile, has a sedative effect.
CHAMOMILE is good for the treatment of nervous conditions and insomnia. It is anti-bacterial and antiseptic, but is mostly valued for its anti-inflammatory properties. Popular uses of chamomile preparations include treating hay fever, inflammation, muscle spasms, menstrual disorders, insomnia, ulcers, gastrointestinal disorders, and hemorrhoids. Chamomile tea is also used to treat skin conditions such as eczema, chickenpox and psoriasis.
TEA TREE is antibacterial, antimicrobial, antiviral, fungicide, insecticide, antiseptic, balsamic, cicatrisant, expectorant, stimulant, and sudorific in nature. This oil is often used in preparations to inhibit bacterial, microbial, and viral infections; killing insects; protecting wounds from becoming septic; promoting absorption of nutrients; and speeds up the healing rate of scars and after marks. With its impressive range of functions, tea tree works to remedy coughs and colds; stimulating systemic functions and appropriate discharges; and is used in many preparations to remedy acne and candida.
ORANGE is a calming, yet uplifting oil. Known as a “skin tonic”, this oil stimulates the lymphatic system and aids in eliminating toxins from the congested skin surface. Orange oil aids in maintaining skin elasticity, reduces wrinkles, and helps to improve overall skin health. Traditionally, orange oil has been used to soothe inflammation, fight depression and uplift mood, protect against sepsis, enhance libido, and as a remedy for sexual dysfunction.
OREGANO is antiviral, antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-parasitic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, digestive, emenagogue, and an anti-allergenic. It is commonly used to inhibit viral, bacterial, fungal and parasitic infections. Oregano oil also works to heal damage done by oxidation, soothes inflammations, promotes digestion, opens up obstructed menstruation, and helps cure allergies. In our own medicine cabinets, oregano oil has become our go-to when we feel the onset of colds or flu-like symptoms.
There are many, many more oils that I could suggest … boasting a wide range of applications. These are what we would call an essential oil “starter kit” and form the foundation of the array of essential oil blends that can be offered in any number of products ranging from soaps to salves.
Wanna know more? As we head toward the end of the month, we will be putting together an opportunity for you to purchase the oils to create your very own Essential Oil Starter Kit … along with a few carrier oils … so you can begin to create your own Medicine Cabinet Magic.
